malaria

Elimination of Malaria in the United States (1947 — 1951) CDC

The program commenced operations on July 1, 1947. It consisted primarily of DDT application to the interior surfaces of rural homes or entire premises in counties where malaria was reported to have been prevalent in recent years.

By the end of 1949, more than 4,650,000 house spray applications had been made.

Endemic malaria: an 'indoor' disease in northern Europe. Historical data analysed

Lena Huldén1*, Larry Huldén2 and Kari Heliövaara1  Malaria Journal 2005

Endemic northern malaria reached 68°N latitude in Europe during the 19th century, where the summer mean temperature only irregularly exceeded 16°C, the lower limit needed for sporogony of Plasmodium vivax.

Because of the available historical material and little use of quinine, Finland was suitable for an analysis of endemic malaria and temperature.

Is malaria "really" a tropical disease?

No it isn't exclusively tropical though it quite probably originated in Africa sometime before we did.

Though Malaria cases in the U.S. currently average less than 2000 per year it was quite a serious health problem here until the discovery of DDT during WW2 made effective mosquito eradication possible in the late 1940's & early 50's.

http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/history...

http://www.boingboing.net/2009/12/07/mal...

The main reason malaria outbreaks have been a recurring problem in Siberia is that's where all the mosquito's are.

Malaria in Russia        July 29, 2009

Many people believe that it is impossible to contract malaria in countries that are far away from the tropics. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Even Russia is not immune to the threat of malaria.
