Study: 4 Trillion Tons of Ice Melt Raising Seas at Alarming Rate Nov 29, 2012

Concluding what colleagues are calling an 'unprecedented' and exhaustive study, scientists on Thursday said they can report "definitively" that the ice sheets of both Antarctica and Greenland are, indeed, melting and that as global temperatures continue to soar this melting will lead to continued and drastic sea level increases.

The study, published by the journal Science, was performed by a large team of scientists and relied heavily on satellite imaging and years of field observations and argues that the extensiveness of the research should end long-running speculation about whether or not the ice sheets, in total, are losing mass.

The massive ice sheets that blanket Greenland and Antarctica are shrinking, according to Penn State geophysicist Sridhar Anandakrishnan,

but understanding how quickly will require a better grasp of glacier dynamics. Anandakrishnan has traveled to Antarctica 17 times in the

past 25 years to study glacial ice streams, frozen rivers of ice that flow from the center of an ice  sheet and out to sea. These streams can be

up to 100 miles in length, a mile deep and 50 miles wide, and most of the melting ice flows through them.

Sridhar Anandakrishnan, a Penn State geosciences professor, is part of a team of university researchers that travels to Antarctica and Greenland to study what the ice sheets can reveal about climate change. He’s also using some of the latest information 

technologies to develop a new type of seismometer, a device that measures the way seismic waves move through the ice. The results form a picture of how the ice sheet is layered and, like the rings of a tree, can show the ice sheet’s history.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The recent slowdown in climate warming is due, at least in part, to natural oscillations in the climate, according to a team of climate scientists, 

who add that these oscillations represent variability internal to the climate system. They do not signal any slowdown in human-caused global warming.

"We know that it is important to distinguish between human-caused and natural climate variability so we can assess the impact of human-caused climate change on a variety

Polar temperatures over the last several million years have, at times, been slightly warmer than today, yet global mean sea level has been 6–9metres higher as recently as the Last Interglacial (130,000 to 115,000 years ago) and possibly higher during the Pliocene epoch (about three million years ago). 

In both cases the Antarctic ice sheet has been implicated as the primary contributor, hinting at its future vulnerability. Here we use a model coupling ice sheet and climate dynamics—including previously underappreciated processes linking atmospheric warming with hydrofracturing of buttressing ice 

shelves and structural collapse of marine-terminating ice cliffs—that is calibrated against Pliocene and Last Interglacial sea-level estimates and applied to future greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Antarctica has the potential to contribute more than a metre of sea-level rise by 2100 and more than 

15metres by 2500, if emissions continue unabated. In this case atmospheric warming will soon become the dominant driver of ice loss, but prolonged ocean warming will delay its recovery for thousands of years.  Pollard.pdf

But before anyone gets the impression that I claim this method offers irrefutable proof that climate change is real and expected, let me clarify that such a cursory analysis 

cannot constitute an airtight case. Leave that to the IPCC (which has, incidentally, concluded that anthropogenic global warming is an airtight case). But I find it personally 

persuasive, understanding the broad outline of the problem. Such simple analysis makes it easy to adopt a default position that climate change is real and expected. 

It would take a lot of convincing evidence of complex masking (conspiratorial?) mechanisms to destroy these pillars. Not impossible, but not easily done.

    (b) There is a curious resonance between this theology and the "deep green" perspective that sees humanity itself as a contaminant, "the ultimate invasive species" 

that threatens the integrity of the earth (in some versions of this idea, the planet - Gaia - will push back until there are none of us left, just as in verse 4 of the hymn).

One major threat of planetary warming is the melting of the great polar ice sheets. Particularly worrisome to researchers is the fragility

of the West Antarctic ice sheet, or WAIS. David Pollard,

a senior research scientist at Penn State, and Robert M. DeConto, professor of climatology at

the University of Massachusetts, have created a computer model of WAIS's last 5 million years.

"One of the next steps is to determine if human activity will make it warm enough to start the collapse," said Pollard.

Penn State updated its five-year strategic plan to include how the University will address climate change and sustainability. The school’s Board of Trustees Committee on Governance and Long-Range planning approved the petition at their January meeting.

The petition, Care2, was created online by Peter Buckland of Penn State’s Sustainability Institute and Jonathan Brockopp, an assistant professor of History and Religious studies. The petition, which generated more than 7,000 signatures, called for Penn State to address climate change publicly. 

The petition challenged the University to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The strategic plan states that Penn State will serve as a leader in addressing and solving the climate change crisis as well as providing renewable energy sources to help the cause. The strategic plan did not, however, address the petition’s goal of reaching zero carbon emissions.

Summary  Although more than 95% of active climate scientists attribute recent global warming to human causes (1, 2) and most of the general public accepts that climate change is occurring, only about half of U.S. adults believe that human activity is the predominant cause (3), 

which is the lowest among 20 nations polled in 2014 (4). We examine how this societal debate affects science classrooms and find that, whereas most U.S. science teachers include climate science in their courses, their insufficient grasp of the science may hinder effective teaching. 

Mirroring some actors in the societal debate over climate change, many teachers repeat scientifically unsupported claims in class. Greater attention to teachers' knowledge, but also values, is critical.
